Text Box: The Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Center began in the late 1950’s from money donated by James Metzenbaum in memory of his wife, Bessie Benner.  The Honorable Mr. James Metzenbaum was a lawyer and a state senator in the 1940’s.  
The purpose of Adult Services is to provide access to functional assessments; independent living skill training; personal, social, work adjustment and training; community based training; community employment training and follow along; retirement services; and ancillary services to enhance independence, employability, and community integration according to the individual’s preferences, desires, and choices.
Metzenbaum Sheltered Industries Inc. (MSI), a program option within the Department of Adult Services, is incorporated as a non-profit corporation, and is governed by the Board of Directors.
The purpose of MSI, is to act as an employer of those individuals participating in production or other “work” activities.  MSI has been in business since 1969 and now has over 150 employees working in over 15,000 square feet of production space.
